Toomey, Casey, and Murphy Work to Honor Canonsburg Hero

Statement

Date: April 6, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senators Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) and Bob Casey (D-Pa.) and Congressman Tim Murphy (R-Pa. 18) are working to honor the life of an American hero: Canonsburg Police Officer Scott Bashioum. While responding to a domestic violence call on November 10, 2016, Officer Bashioum was killed in the line of duty.

Described as being "born to help people," Officer Bashioum joined the Canonsburg Police Department seven years ago following a 25-year career in the United States Air Force. During his time in the Air Force, Officer Bashioum was deployed during the Persian Gulf War and Operation Enduring Freedom. He also served as the Assistant Chief at the Slovan Fire Department.

Senators Toomey and Casey and Congressman Murphy have introduced legislation in both the Senate (S. 831) and House (H.R. 1950) honoring Officer Bashioum by renaming the U.S. Post Office in Canonsburg on West Pike Street the ""Police Officer Scott Bashioum Post Office Building." The legislation has been referred to each chamber's respective committee responsible for oversight of the Postal Service.

"Officer Scott Bashioum devoted his entire adult life to making his community and our country a safer place to live, work, and raise a family," said Senator Toomey. "For 29 years, Officer Bashioum served in the United States Air Force and was deployed during both the Persian Gulf War and Operation Enduring Freedom. After retiring as a Senior Master Sergeant, Officer Bashioum joined the Canonsburg Police Department while also serving as the Assistant Chief at the Slovan Fire Department. I can think of no greater compliment than to say Officer Bashioum embodied what it means to be a public servant. Renaming the Canonsburg Post Office after Officer Bashioum is a small yet important step we can take to honor his life and legacy."

"Renaming this post office is one way to express our profound gratitude for the sacrifice of Officer Bashioum," Senator Casey said. "There's no way one piece of legislation, or a whole series of bills, could properly honor the sacrifice of Officer Bashioum, but this bill is one measure that will pay tribute to him and all those who sacrifice on our behalf."

"We are celebrating the life of Officer Scott Bashioum, a beloved son, brother, father, husband and friend," said Congressman Murphy. "Scott's life was dedicated to serving and protecting others; first as a Senior Master Sergeant in the Air Force, then as an officer for the Canonsburg Police Department. Naming his hometown post office as the "Police Officer Scott Bashioum Post Office Building' is a fitting tribute to all that he did for the community he loved so dearly and this nation he honorably served. I consider it a great honor to have been asked by his brother Michael to introduce the legislation in Congress to officially name the Canonsburg Post Office in memory of Officer Scott Bashioum and uphold his legacy in the community."
